Oct 28 - New App Launched To Mark The Start Of This Year's Movember Campaign

This year’s Movember campaign started with the launch of a new app aimed at young men to help raise awareness of prostate cancer.

The Mayor Adolfo Canepa and the recently appointed Minister for Health Neil Costa hosted members from Prostate Cancer Support Group Gibraltar at a reception at the Mayor's Parlour in City Hall this morning to mark the start of month-long fund-raising and awareness campaign.

Mr Costa assured the group that although he wouldn’t grow a moustache, he would support the campaign by combining it with exercise and run around in Gibraltar in whatever apparel they gave to him to wear on every Sunday during the month of November.

A special thanks were given to fund raising efforts from the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission’s Free The Knee campaign and to those who have taken part in the charity skydive in support of the group.

Chairman John Diaz said: “We need to believe that we can fight prostate cancer and that we can beat prostate cancer, and we need to progress.

“My message for this year’s Movember campaign is to get together and work together. By being together and fighting together, we can do a whole lot of things.

“The app should be more accessible to younger men and it’s very important for them to recognise their symptoms.”

He highlighted the success of the prostate clinic, mentioning a two-week wait for diagnosis, which he said is fantastic, and a shorter waiting time to see the urologist.

The next stop for the Prostate Cancer Support Group Gibraltar was to launch the app with the aim to raise awareness and keep those people fighting prostate cancer in the loop with up-to-date news from Prostate UK and tips on how to manage symptoms on a “personal basis”.
