Oct 07 - Teen Who Escaped From Police Jailed For Six Months

An 18-year-old man was today sentenced to six months in jail for escaping police custody. The incident, which took place during the summer, led to an extensive manhunt across the South District.

Sean Casey appeared in the Supreme Court this morning, facing one count of escaping from lawful custody and one count of making threats to kill. He had earlier pleaded guilty to both charges.

The incident dates back to Sunday 5th July when Casey managed to overpower a police sergeant while in custody and escaped from New Mole House Police Station.

When he was tracked down in Rosia Dale one hour and 45 minutes later, he picked up a piece of glass and told the officer: “If you catch me I’ll kill you.”

Casey was tackled by police dogs and taken back to the police station, and has been on remand for the past three months.

Appearing for the defendant, Jay Gomez said this was not a pre-meditated action, but rather an “extremely stupid” reaction. He said Casey showed remorse and had entered an early guilty plea.

The Chief Justice Anthony Dudley sentenced Casey to six months in prison for escaping police custody, and dropped the charges for making threats to kill. The three months already served in custody will be taken into consideration.

Mark Zammitt appeared for the Crown.
