Feb 09 - Man Accused Of Assaulting Partner Gives Evidence

The man accused of beating up his former girlfriend and then stopping her from leaving their shared home pleaded his innocence as he gave evidence at a Supreme Court trial today.

Benjamin Shaw, 27, denies all three charges of false imprisonment, common assault by battery and dangerous driving.

It is alleged he got into an argument with his former girlfriend in their shared home, and he proceeded to beat her up and stopped her from leaving the house. A few days later, Shaw was accused of dangerous driving after he allegedly swerved, overtook and stopped suddenly in front of the car his former girlfriend and son were in. Both incidents date back to April of last year.

Giving evidence in the Supreme Court today, Shaw said he and his former girlfriend had a “volatile” relationship, and accused her of being “two-faced”. He claims he only stayed with his former girlfriend for nearly six years because of their son.

The trial is expected to conclude tomorrow.

Puisne Judge Karen Prescott Ramagge presides over the trial, Joelle Wahnon appears for the defendant and Johann Fernandez appears for the Crown.
