Feb 10 - False Imprisonment And Assault Trial Concludes - Local Man Found Not Guilty

A 27-year-old man accused of falsely imprisoning and beating up his former girlfriend, with whom he had a tumultuous and turbulent relationship, was found not guilty by a jury following a Supreme Court trial.

Benjamin Shaw, 27, of Prince Edward's Road, maintained his innocence for three charges relating to two separate incidents which reportedly took place in April last year.

At the end of a three-day trial, the jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict on all three counts:  one of false imprisonment, one of common assault by battery and one count of dangerous driving.

While summing up the case, defence counsel Joelle Wahnon reminded the jury that the stories from the defendant and his former girlfriend did not match.

She accused her client's former girlfriend, with whom he had a son, of having a "habit of embellishing", adding that she had created a "fictitious scene" while she gave her testimony.

The trial was heard by Puisne Judge Karen Ramagge Prescott.

Johann Fernandez appeared for the Crown.
