Apr 24 - Man Charged Following Domestic Violence Incident And Dramatic Arrest By Willis’s Road

A Spanish man has been charged following dramatic scenes yesterday which culminated in a short but tense stand-off at Willis’s Road.

Ruben Becerra Vasquez, 36, of Willis’s Road, was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident yesterday evening.

Uniformed officers responding to this report discovered the man had left the scene in a vehicle together with his two children (one aged three years and the other 18 months).

Following an extensive search, the police were able to locate them within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

In attempt to evade officers, Becerra Vasquez is reported to have driven dangerously across the Upper Rock and into the Upper Town, where officers intercepted his vehicle at the junction of Willis’s Road with Castle Road.

Eyewitnesses report seeing two patrol cars blocking Becerra Vasquez’s vehicle while officers tried to convince the suspect to hand over his children.

For a while, the car remained locked but, within a minute or so, both children, who were unharmed, were handed over into the arms of police officers. Officers were then able to arrest the man who is reported to have shouted loudly.

Becerra Vasquez was later charged as follows:

1 count of Making Threats to Kill

2 counts of Dangerous Driving

1 count of Common Assault

1 count of Resisting Police

He remains in police custody pending his appearance at the Magistrates’ Court tomorrow at 10am.
