Jul 01 - Man Sentenced For Dangerous Driving

A 26-year-old man has been handed a community order and banned from driving for a year after being found guilty of dangerous driving.

Shane Hernandez appeared before the Supreme Court this morning for sentencing after a jury found him guilty of one count of dangerous driving following a trial last month.

The incident dates back to three years ago, when Hernandez was involved in a collision with another vehicle after he was found to be driving at a high speed northbound on Line Wall Road.

The victim, who was pregnant at the time, collapsed from the shock and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

While sentencing, Puisne Judge Christopher Butler said the defendant was fortunate there had been no long-term injury to the victim, adding that he should have expected to stop at any moment on the busy road.

He added that Hernandez had reached a positive turn in his life and runs his own business working with cars. He imposed an 80 hour community order and disqualified him from driving for a year.

Karl Tonna appeared for the Crown, and Justin Phillips appeared for the defendant.
