The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Apr 17 - Police Trainees Complete Successful 12 Month Course

rgp trainees Yesterday evening the first cadre of police trainees for 2014 completed their first year in service. The initiative was kick started by the RGP and the Ministry for Enterprise and Training and saw six youngsters aged sixteen and seventeen experience ‘serving the public and Gibraltar alongside police officers, whilst participating in a structured training and development programme.’ Five of the six trainees completed the year long course.

The programme was designed to give the Trainees an understanding of what life as a Police Officer involves. They have worked alongside Police Constables, learning about police work in a balanced training programme that has included classroom-based learning alongside practical learning in a more 'hands-on' environment. They have participated in non-confrontational policing duties and police related activities, such as crime prevention projects, carrying out attachments to different policing divisions and specialist departments, learning First Aid, and engaging in community projects such as the RGP Mini Olympiad, Clean up the World Campaign, Law Enforcement Torch Run and assisted in Club House projects.

Trainees Jesse Sampere, Kaylan Borda, Ryan Castle, Giovanni Crespillo and Jade Lewis Thomas were presented with certificates by Minister for Enterprise, Training and Employment Joe Bossano. Justice Minister Gilbert Licudi also attended the New Mole House based ceremony.

The trainees, will now be seconded to the three divisions where they will continue to be exposed to all aspects of general police work and partake in youth community projects. They will now wear a single band on their epaulettes signifying completion of the course.

Commenting on the success of the scheme, Minister Bossano noted that the programme served to restore a similar scheme that existed many years ago. He added, ‘some of you may not have yet decided what you will choose to do in later life, but I am confident, that if you do not choose to serve our community with the Royal Gibraltar Police, at the very least the training and experience you have received will give you a head start in later life.’
