Apr 23 - Unmarked Patrol Vehicles Used In RGP’s Operation Roadwatch

The Royal Gibraltar Police and in particular officers of the Traffic Department continue to implement the organisation’s banner operation with regard to road policing known as Operation Roadwatch.

The evening of Friday 11th April saw the introduction, for the first time, of unmarked patrol vehicles by the RGP as an additional strand of Operation Roadwatch. This is the continuance of the commitment to ensure safety on Gibraltar’s roads.

The three strands of Operation Roadwatch continue to be education, awareness and enforcement. The aim is to encourage good road user behaviour and reduce the number of serious traffic accidents. The RGP continues to work with other stakeholders to educate road users and improve awareness on road safety saying that this remains the preferred method. Nevertheless, the RGP stress that strict enforcement will take place where necessary as is evidenced by the deployment of the unmarked car.

One such unmarked vehicle was used by officers on patrol on the evening of the 11th April together with other uniformed officers. This resulted in 12 drivers being reported for speeding and one driver being reported for dangerous driving. Two persons were reported for process for not wearing seatbelts and five other minor traffic matters were dealt with.
