Jul 04 - RGP Gives Advice Following Series Of Residential Burglaries Across Gibraltar

According to the RGP, the past week has seen a few residential burglaries across Gibraltar, the majority of which are assessed to have been perpetrated by opportunists.
In most cases, access has been gained via open doors or windows. Despite this, the RGP stresses that incidents such as these are extremely rare in Gibraltar.

The advice offered by the police is as follows:

The summer period is traditionally a time for doors (especially balconies) and windows to be left open/insecure, especially during the silent hours. Ground floor properties and buildings surrounded by scaffolding can be particularly vulnerable.

Opportunistic burglars search for easy targets that involve minimal risks, avoiding areas with strong lighting, CCTV coverage as well as security deadlocks or windows.

Many burglaries CAN be prevented by adopting basic measures:

- The most vulnerable parts of your property are likely to be the main entrance or ground floor windows. If entrances/windows are not secure, neither is your property. Always secure all doors and windows to your property when leaving home.
All accessible windows can be fitted with window locks incorporating keys. If a window is easily accessible, it may also be appropriate to limit how wide it can be opened, or fit bars or a grille that can be opened in an emergency from the inside. Roller shutters can also protect windows and provide another delay method.
Fit the entrance door with a suitable five-lever mortise lock or higher. Ensure that you apply door locks when leaving your home AND during the silent hours.
Check that door hinges are sturdy and secured with strong screws. For added security, fit hinge bolts. These are inexpensive and help to reinforce the hinge side of a door against the use of force.

- Ensure all storage garages/areas are also secured.

The public is reminded that in addition to considering security measures at your home, any persons seen acting suspiciously in the vicinity of a residence/estate should be reported to the RGP Command & Dispatch Unit on 20072500, or in an Emergency, dial 199/112
