Nov 14 - Internet Scam Warning by RGP
The RGP has warned the public of a ‘Malware’ scam that is currently circulating the Internet, falsely claiming to be from software companies like Microsoft Windows. This specific type of malware locks screens and requests members of the public to pay a fine to get their computers unlocked. The malware infects personal computers after users have accessed certain websites.
In order to reduce the chances of being infected by this or similar malware, the RGP strongly recommend that anti-virus software is both used and routinely updated to keep pace with new threats as they are discovered. In addition, operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS routinely issue updates that patch potential vulnerabilities.
Another scam relates to ‘boiler room’ scams in which members of the public are contacted by shareholding companies offering to purchase or sell you shares at a good price. Contact in these types of scams can be via email and by telephone and the RGP strongly recommend not to reply to any such scams where they are suspected to be such.
Those who fear they may have been deceived by scams and have parted with any money are urged to contact the RGP’s Serious Crime Unite by telephone on 200 72500 or via email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
