  • Government Disappointed at EU Parliament Delisting Vote

The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Nov 28 - Operation Gibwatch – Festive Season Crime Prevention

As part of Operation GibWatch, on the 1st of December, the Royal Gibraltar Police will be launching a crime awareness and safety advice campaign in the lead up to this year’s festive season.

The RGP’s Crime Prevention & Reduction Unit will be offering practical advice on its “Christmas Crime Prevention Calendar”, which will appear on the RGP website www.police.gi on Monday the 1st of December. Each daily crime prevention message is an excerpt from a variety of literature that will be hosted on the website during the next few weeks. The public will be able to access the calendar directly through the site or via daily links on Twitter & Facebook.

In comparison to other European jurisdictions, Gibraltar generally remains a safe place to live and work in. However, there should never be any room for complacency. Particularly because Christmas and the weeks leading up to it traditionally see an increase in visitors to Gibraltar, more of us frequenting shopping and leisure areas and also shopping online. It is not uncommon for there to be a slight increase in some crimes at this time of year. Examples of these include burglary, theft (from vehicles as well as by pick-pockets) and fraud (in relation to online shopping).

Crime Prevention is a collective responsibility, and it is the RGP’s intention to continue to develop and promote effective partnerships that will enable the delivery of this advice to our community. The RGP will issue advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime and also encouraging everyone to avoid situations that could potentially put them at risk of harm.

The RGP also encourage everyone to enjoy the festive season in a safe way and without putting personal property at risk, the public are therefore invited to browse the advice posted on the website, follow and share RGP Facebook posts and re-tweet advice to friends and family.

The advice delivered during the next few weeks will include key messages on issues such as:

 Protecting motorcycles/bicycles/cars

 Cyber (Online Shopping / Scams)

 ATM Advice

 Your Home & personal belongings

 Going on Holiday / Out for the Evening

 Alcohol-related crime
