Apr 30 - RGP Intercept Three Smuggling Operations In 24 Hours

During the past 24 hours RGP officers have intercepted three illicit tobacco smuggling operations.

The first of these instances was at 11:00 on Wednesday 29th April  at Western Beach and Winston Churchill Avenue when officers responded to suspicious activity and recovered four half boxes of American Legend cigarettes (20,000 cigarettes) on the beach itself. A search of the area led officers to stop and detain four Spanish nationals resident in La Linea aged between 24 and 36 years who have been subsequently linked to the tobacco seized and arrested for the possession of a commercial quantity of cigarettes and their attempted exportation.

The second occasion was at 03:50 on 30th April at Emerson’s Place where a local 32 year old man was arrested for the offence of knowingly being concerned in the exportation of a commercial quantity of cigarettes. In this case the local man’s car has also been impounded pending further investigations.

The third incident occurred at 05:10Hrs on 30th April at Winston Churchill Avenue when another local 32 year old man was arrested for obstructing police in the execution of their duty after he used the car he was driving to block the path of police patrol car involved in the chase of another vehicle involved in illicit activities. The man was also found to be in possession of two radio transceivers without holding a licence for them.

All the arrested men have been granted police bail to appear at New Mole House Police HQ on diverse dates in the near future.
