May 29 – Two Spanish Nationals Sentenced To Prison For Importing 30kg Of Cannabis Resin

Two Spaniards were sentenced to 20 months in prison for importing 30kg of cannabis resin into Gibraltar waters.

Roberto Alejandro Chessman Garcia and Giovanni Aranda Iglesias, both 25, were sentenced at the Supreme Court this morning.

In April, the men were on their way to Spain on a wooden vessel when bad weather forced them into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.  Chessman Garcia and Aranda Iglesias were approached by the Royal Gibraltar Police when they were seen throwing a cargo overboard.

The police managed to retrieve a bale weighing 30kg.

The Crown heard that the two men were victims of dire financial circumstances, and speaking for the defence, Christoper Pitto said both men were remorseful for their actions.

The two men pleaded guilty to the possession and importation of the drugs, and having jettisoned the cargo.
