The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Jun 03 – Court Gives Teenager A Chance To “Put His Life Right”

A teenager has been given the opportunity to turn his life around after appearing in the Juvenile Court this morning.

The court heard that the 16-year-old was remanded in custody after breaching a previous suspended sentence for one count of burglary and two counts of taking a conveyance. The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested in April following a robbery charge, which breached his original suspended sentence, and is currently serving a 4-month prison sentence.

Puisne Judge Karen Prescott gave the local youth a year-long youth rehabilitation order and a supervision order with a probation officer after hearing that the youth has been receiving counselling and had asked for help in prison.

Appearing for the defendant, Francis Borastero-Porter said: “He was arrested on his 16th birthday, and he was supposed to be attending his party that night. When it didn’t happen it really hit him and it made him realise this is not a joke anymore.”

Judge Prescott said: “For some reason I believe that with the necessary support you can put your life right.

“Every now and then someone like you comes along that the court feels that with a little bit of assistance we can help you put your life right and get out of this behaviour pattern, which if you continue with, you will spend your entire life in and out of prison.

“You have been to prison now, you have a taste of what your life will be like if you don’t turn your life around.”

Carl Ramagge appeared for the Crown.
