Aug 21 - Man Remanded In Custody For Stealing Jewellery From Girlfriend’s Terminally Ill Grandmother

A local man has been remanded in custody ahead of being sentenced for the “unpleasant offence” of stealing around £10,000 worth of jewellery from his girlfriend’s terminally ill grandmother which he sold to fund his cocaine habit.

Nigel Segui, of Schomberg House, was remanded in custody at the Supreme Court this morning by Puisne Judge Adrian Jack because he was concerned about the defendant’s cocaine use.

Segui pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place last year, and the court heard that the victim of the theft has since passed away.

Claire Pizzarello, who appeared for the defendant on behalf of Darren Martinez, told the Crown her client “hit rock bottom last year” when the offence took place, but had been attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings on a daily basis and had been seeing a counsellor.

Puisne Judge Jack informed the court that the pre-sentencing report was “not very optimistic”.

Segui is due to appear at the Supreme Court on Tuesday 22nd September for sentencing.
