May 25 – Alan Perez Takes Top Prize In Spring Visual Arts Exhibition

Alan Perez has won the top prize at this year’s Gibraltar Spring Visual Arts Exhibition with his installation piece ‘Shame on Europe history repeats itself.’

The exhibition opened yesterday evening at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery and is organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

The Acting Chief Minister, Samantha Sacramento, officially opened the exhibition and presented the prizes. Ms Sacramento said: “The level of talent is displayed in the different media that artists have chosen for this exhibition. Certainly, we are spoilt for talent in Gibraltar and I can’t say that enough. We always have fantastic support from the community for these events.”

Ms Sacramento also highlighted the continued support of Mr Alwani who this year sponsored the £1,000 Gibraltar Theme Award.

A total of one hundred and forty five entries by seventy-three local artists were submitted. Canadian artist Warren Carther carried out the judging in the painting, sculpture, photographic, video and installation categories.

Mr Carther said: “I didn’t really know what to expect…but the quality overall is outstanding and I want to congratulate all those who participated.”

The Prize winners are:

- Photograph Award, £500: Vera Francis ‘Justice’

- Painting, Drawing, Prints
 and Digital Painting, £500: Patricia Cora Lombard ‘Pearlception’

- Video Category, £500: Karl Ullger ‘One Trick Pony’

- 
Installation Award, £500: Alan Perez ‘Shame on Europe history repeats itself’

Best Gibraltar Theme
, The Alwani Foundation Award, £1000: Kristel Anne Turner ‘Dante’s Ulysses sailing through the Strait of Gibraltar – Inferno’
