Jun 29 - Bayside And Westside Actors Travel To UK Drama Festival

Bayside and Westside Drama Group will be flying to the United Kingdom next week to once again take part in the Duncan Rand Youth One-Act Play Festival held at Medway Little Theatre in Rochester (Kent). This marks the fourth time that the group takes part in the Festival, having come second in all previous occasions.

This year, the group will be entering two plays, both of which also formed part of the 2016 Gibraltar Drama Festival. In Jesus’ Name is an original play by group leader Julian Felice and won Best Original Play when staged in Gibraltar last March, with the award for Best Youth Actor going to Chris Ablitt, one of the play’s leads. The second play, The Trial by Steven Berkoff, won the most awards at the Festival, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress (Billy Snell, Sam Bush and Katherine Balbuena respectively) and tells the surreal story of an individual’s struggle against the state in an adaptation from Franz Kafka’s famous novel. These are two challenging pieces that, it is hoped, will yield good results.

The group has enjoyed significant success at the Duncan Rand Festival in the past. In addition to the three runner-up places, the group has won a large number of acting and technical awards, a record that the group hopes to maintain. As well as taking part in the Festival, the group will be taking part in a joint workshop with Medway Little Theatre’s Youth Company, with whom Bayside and Westside have always enjoyed a close relationship.

The group departs on Thursday 7th, perform the following day, and return to Gibraltar on Sunday 10th.
