Sunday 16 November 2014

4:00pm

Duration: 1 Hour

Venue: Lower Reading Room, The Gibraltar Garrison Library

Ticket Price: £10

Author, publisher and journalist Barnaby Rogerson looks at the enduring fascination with the North African city of Marrakesh.  Rogerson has written dozens of travel articles, book reviews and historical essays on various North African and Islamic themes over the last 15 years and edited a collection of writing about the history and culture of Marrakesh, Through Writers’ Eyes Marrakesh. The collection explores the mystique surrounding Marrakesh through the eyes of 40 writers who have succumbed to its enchantments.

Rogerson has written widely on North Africa and the Muslim world. His recent works include, The Last Crusaders: The Battle for Gold God and Dominion, The Life of the Prophet Muhammad and Heirs of the Prophet and the Roots of the Sunni-Shia Schism. He is a prolific travel writer and has written guides to Morocco, Cyprus, Tunisia and Scotland. Among his most recent books is Rogerson’s Book of Numbers, a journey through the history of numbers and their significance described by historian and travel writer William Dalrymple as ‘dangerously addictive, wonderfully witty and crazily wide-ranging and erudite’.

Rogerson also runs Eland Publishing with his partner Rose Baring. It specialises in keeping classics of travel literature in print.  He speaks at a second festival event on The Last Crusaders.
