Oct 07 - Government Prepares For Chief Minister’s UN Address

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia leave Gibraltar for London today on the way to New York.

In New York, the Chief Minister will address the Fourth Committee of the United Nations. He will defend the right of the people of Gibraltar to self-determination and decolonisation through removal from the United Nations list of Non Self Governing Territories.

Mr Picardo will also update the Committee on developments in Gibraltar since his last address and is expected to respond to the statements made to the General Assembly by Spanish Foreign Minister Snr Margallo last week.

In the absence of Mr Picardo and Dr Garcia, the Minister for the Environment and Health Dr John Cortes will act as Chief Minister until Saturday when Dr Garcia returns to Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister will remain in London until Wednesday for a number of meetings and to lead on the Gibraltar Day events.
