Nov 24 - GSLP-Liberal Alliance Candidates Meet With A Number Of Organisations Ahead Of The Elections

The Leader of the GSLP-Liberals, Fabian Picardo, has met with a number of representative organisations in the run-up to the General Election on Thursday, including the Dignity at Work Committee, the Gibraltar Pensioners Association, and the Jewish Community.

A spokesman for the Alliance said: “Mr Picardo met with the Committee of Diginity at Work to review the magnificent progress made in the last four years in controlling work place bullying.  The important milestone reached in the lifetime of this Parliament was the introduction of the Anti-Bullying at Work legislation alongside affording protection to whistleblowers.  The DAWN Committee indicated to Mr Picardo that they are generally happy with the achievements so far and now want to continue working together with the new Government  to put policies into greater effect.

“As far as the Civil Service is concerned, Mr Picardo has agreed that if re-elected he will work to ensure the anti-bullying policy filters down to all line managers and a cultural change has to develop to be in line with the values underpinning the act and the policy and to this end a periodic meeting with the Chief Minister would be arranged to discuss DIGNITY AT WORK issues.  Implementation was agreed to include promoting greater awareness also in the private sector and information being provided for new Companies and Enterprises at the time of registration.  Additionally there should be available and visible information about the Gibraltar dignity at work standards and Employment (Bullying at Work) Act 2014.  Formal and continuous training was also discussed to guarantee that HR, Heads of Departments and managers generally have the appropriate courses and personal development to manage people by promoting adequate relationships and communication at work in order to guarantee a positive and healthy working environment.   This would include provision of a one stop shop by Government to deal with bullying at work complaints: to facilitate the affected parties specialised information about how to proceed with regard to investigation, mediation and support.

“Mr Picardo also met with representatives of the Committee of the Gibraltar Pensioners Association.  A discussion led to agreements as to the speedier implementation of the re-introduction of WOPS legislation if the GSLP-Liberal Alliance is re-elected, as well as the timing for a new Freedom of Information Act and the progress being made in respect of a Double Taxation Agreement being concluded with the United Kingdom amongst other issues of wide agreement with the representatives of the Committee.

“Yesterday evening Mr Picardo, accompanied by seven other GSLP/Liberal candidates attended a “Town Hall” style meeting with members of the Jewish Community.  The meeting was very well attended indeed, with the School Hall at the Jewish School entirely full with standing room only.  Mr Picardo and the other candidates each dealt with questions from those present on all aspects of life in Gibraltar.  In particular, Mr Picardo dealt with issues of parking, housing, security, public finances, LNG and power generation amongst others.  Mr Picardo also dealt with concerns and fears raised by Mr Feetham at his intervention before the same audience last week.”

Mr Picardo, the Leader of the GSLP and of the GSLP-Liberal Alliance, said: “I have enjoyed meeting these and all the many other representative organisations who have reached out to us in these past weeks.  We have learnt a lot from the people we have met about the issues that concern various groups now, having already dealt with many of their previous issues.

“I sincerely hope that the people of Gibraltar will vote for us on Thursday and in that way allow me to continue working for all our citizens for the next four years, dealing with these and so many other issues that remain to be dealt with.”
