Nov 25 – GSLP-Libs In Drive To Make Gibraltar A “Centre Of Excellence” For Online Gaming

In their final policy press conference before tomorrow’s general election, the GSLP-Libs have pledged to make Gibraltar an international “centre of excellence” for online gaming by working closely with top professionals in the industry and heading off any challenges.

The GSLP’s Albert Isola, whose ministerial portfolio has included both financial services and gaming since he joined the Government in he 2013 by-election, stressed the importance of innovation and close cooperation with the major gaming operators.

“In this industry, if you’re not going forwards, you’re really slipping backwards,” he said adding that his team had sat down “with each and every one” of the gaming operators to listen to their needs and proposals.

Mr Isola highlighted the growth experienced by the industry locally which has seen an increase of 1,000 gaming jobs in the last four years.

Also speaking this afternoon, Liberal Party Leader Dr Joseph Garcia said he found it “incredible” that the GSD had not devoted any space in its manifesto to the gaming industry which is responsible for employing some 3,000 people locally and is a major contributor to Gibraltar’s GDP.

Mr Isola added that the GSD had omitted financial services, gaming and the port from its manifesto.

It was, he said, “mind-boggling” that the party should ignore sectors that together account for around 8,000 jobs.

Looking to the future, the GSLP-Libs say that they will work with all operators to ensure that Gibraltar remains an attractive jurisdiction in the long term. The party says that it will continue to ensure that the Rock’s regulatory environment remains “robust and responsive.”
