Feb 05 - Picardo “Confident” There Will Be No Compulsory Redundancies At MoD

The Chief Minister has said that he is “confident” that there will not be any compulsory redundancies at the MoD once the global agreement runs its course next year.

Mr Picardo told the press that he had had a positive meeting with the UK Armed Forces Minister Penny Mordaunt during which the security of local MoD jobs was discussed. Mr Picardo added that he had a good relationship with the Minister.

The possibility that local jobs might be threatened was raised by the UK’s Strategic Defence and Security Review which envisages cuts to MoD staff. However, Mr Picardo said that the recent transfer of the Defence Fire Service to the Government and Gibraltar’s continued strategic importance as a forward mounting base for conflict zones in the Middle East would count in Gibraltar’s favour and be factored into any final decision.

Mr Picardo said: “My feeling from my meeting with Ms Mordaunt is that we have somebody who is going to fight for jobs in Gibraltar.”
