Apr 27 - Workers’ Memorial Day Ceremony

A ceremony to mark Workers’ Memorial Day was held this morning in the Alameda Gardens.

Representatives from Gibraltar’s essential services and other organisations laid wreaths and a one-minute silence was observed.

In a short address, the Minister for Employment, Business and Health and Safety, Neil Costa, said: “We deeply care for the well-being of every employee, as well as all those who may be involved in, or affected by, any of our operations. As a result, management and performance must be improved to create a safe working environment for employees, contractors, visitors and the general public.”

Mr Costa expanded on the news that the Government would introduce a new health and safety policy: “Although, for now, this Policy will set best industry guidelines and will only be applicable to Government and its employees, we intend to introduce this Policy as Codes of Practice for all of Gibraltar in due course and after full consultation with industry.

“It must be said that the Government’s new policy would not have been possible without the input and advice of Unite the Union. They have been instrumental in conveying the importance of a safe working environment for everyone.”

Minister Costa concluded: “It should go without saying, that this fundamental work is only the beginning of a more focused, determined and substantive approach to the critical endeavor of keeping everyone safe. We will continue to strive for a world where work does not make you ill, injure you or kill.”

Gillian Birkett, from Unite’s Health and Safety Committee, underlined the importance of “strong unions” to guarantee the health and safety of employees. “Unionised workplaces are safer,” she said.

She said that Unite welcomed today’s announcement by the Government of a new health and safety policy.

“Let us remember the dead and continue to fight for the living,” she concluded.
