May 25 - Gibraltar House In Brussels Celebrates First Anniversary

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia and Attorney General Michael Llamas QC are in Brussels “telling the proud story of Gibraltar”.

This was their message to a crowd of nearly 100 MEPs, European Commission officials, representatives from other delegations and friends of Gibraltar at a reception held to mark a year since Gibraltar House opened in the European capital.

Mr Picardo gave thanks to Sir Graham Watson, EU Counsel For HM Government of Gibraltar, and Daniel D’Amato, Legal Officer Representation to the European Union, and the other staff members at Gibraltar House for their work over the past year.

Mr Picardo said that when the decision was made to open Gibraltar House in Brussels, he wanted to see the Gibraltar flag flying proudly in the heart of the city of Brussels.

He went on to talk about how the Rock is fully compliant with all EU directives, and said this is part of Gibraltar’s culture to place itself to the highest regulatory standards.

Mr Picardo added: “Of course, if you comply with the rules you’re entitled to the benefits of a membership of the club, and part of the job of Gibraltar House is to ensure Gibraltar is never overlooked and that the story of Gibraltar is told in the positive way that it deserves to be told, and that people understand Gibraltar is never going to be a problem for Europe, it is an opportunity for Europe.”

The Chief Minister added that the Government of Gibraltar, the Opposition, trade unions and organisations all believe that Gibraltar and the United Kingdom should remain within the European Union.
