Jun 24 - Feetham: Referendum Result Is “Magnificent”

The Leader of the GSD Daniel Feetham has said that Gibraltar’s result for the EU Referendum is “magnificent”.

Speaking to YGTV after the results were announced at the University of Gibraltar, Mr Feetham said: “I think it’s a magnificent result with a magnificent turnout, and it shows that when Gibraltar’s back is against the wall, people will respond to defend Gibraltar.

“It also shows that people will put aside political differences in order to do precisely that, and that is what we have done as political parties and if this arises again, we’ll do it again.”

With regards to campaigning for the EU Referendum, Mr Feetham insists that this was a strange campaign because there was no opposition.

“What was important from our point of view was to get people out there to vote, and I think we have done that with an 84% turnout – probably higher than any other regions in the United Kingdom,” he said, while thanking the volunteers who have helped with the referendum.

With regards to a “worryingly” close result in the UK in favour of a “Brexit”, Mr Feetham said: “Gibraltar is a part of the British family, and we have participated in this referendum as part of the British family.

“This has been a huge act of democracy, bearing in mind that the UK has not shunned away from having a Scottish referendum in 2016 and an EU referendum two years later, and that ought to be celebrated and not shunned away.”
