Jun 28 - Government Lobbies In London After EU Referendum

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia have held a number of political meetings in London throughout the day. This follows the EU Referendum last week in which Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly to remain.

The Government is now exploring all the options in order to determine how to best protect the position of Gibraltar in the future.

Mr Picardo was able to speak to the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, about giving effect to the possibility of Scotland and Gibraltar remaining in the EU, in line with the views of their respective people. They agreed that technical experts from the two Governments should meet in order to review the situation.

The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister met with the Minister for Europe David Lidington.

Mr Picardo was given the opportunity to brief the All Party Gibraltar Group in the House of Commons during the afternoon. He informed MPs about the position of the Gibraltar Government following the EU Referendum. He made the point that Gibraltar would never agree to joint sovereignty with Spain as the price to pay for access to the Single Market. However, he told MPs that the future has no shape at present and that it is open to be shaped.

This evening, the Chief Minister will host a reception at Speaker's House in the House of Commons in honour of Albert Poggio, who retires later this week as Director of Gibraltar House and UK Representative of the Government.
