Oct 21 – GSD: Cortes Was “Out Of Touch On Health”

The GSD has said that the “angry response” by the former Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, to the concerns expressed to the Opposition by members of the public, “illustrates how out of touch” this Government has become. The GSD says that whether those concerns are expressed on social media or in meetings with members of the Opposition, “it makes no difference and they should not be brushed under the carpet.”

A statement from the party continued: “The fact that three consultant surgeons have left the GHA in recent times or that formal complaints to the GHA Complaints Board have increased very significantly in recent years or that bed blocking is still a huge problem at the hospital, which could have been dealt with had the dementia unit not been delayed for five years, cannot be ignored. These are just some of the issues we raised in our communique and the Minister should have got off his high horse and done something about it before he was moved to another Ministry.

“The latest concerns expressed by members of the public to the Opposition relate to problems being experienced at the GHA laboratory, where members of the public are being told that considerable delays in obtaining test results is due to the lack of a pathologist. One patient who is really concerned about the results of a biopsy is being told that until the pathologist is brought over from the UK, the results will not be known. Another patient has been waiting for a set of fairly routine results for nearly a month. We hope the new Minister for Health, Mr Costa, does not ignore the concerns of the public as Mr. Cortes has been doing. We certainly wish Mr. Costa well in his new post.”
