Oct 27 - GSD Presses Government On Lack Of Signs And Planning

The Opposition has said that, at yesterday’s Parliamentary session, GSD MP Lawrence Llamas questioned the Government as to why the Government were not updating and maintaining signs in Gibraltar, in particular with relation to the four month old Windsor Bridge and the almost three month old Mid-Town Multi Storey car park. This came as a result of a study conducted by Mr Llamas, in which he has been gathering feedback from tourists in Gibraltar and online.

Answering on behalf of the Government, the former Minister for Tourism, Samantha Sacramento replied: “When we need signs, its not like one can go to a supermarket and buy a sign Mr Speaker! Signs need to go before the planning authority and they need to be procured, it’s a whole system that needs to be in place”

Mr Llamas said: “Naturally this highlights the lack of planning and thought which goes into Government projects to the social and environmental detriment of visitors and locals as a whole. The Government have had ample time to plan, rectify or at the very least remedy their minor yet impacting details.”

Mr Llamas has invited the Government to read his opinion piece in the Gibraltar Chronicle on the 11th October 2016. He says the article simply deals with the tip of the iceberg, but it would be expected that if Government could deal with the issues highlighted before the next peak tourist season, it “should avoid the staggering increase in negative reviews” being plastered on sites such as TripAdvisor, which, he claims, has seen the “Terrible” ratings for the Rock of Gibraltar double in the last six months from 35 to 70 since reviews were commenced.
