Jul 22 - Costa Welcomes Gibraltar Port Authority Focus In New Statesman

Gibraltar’s bunkering industry has been the subject of a special feature in the online edition of the New Statesman magazine this month. In an article, the new Captain of the Port, Bob Sanguinetti, explains many of the tightly regulated procedures involved in the provision of fuel to visiting vessels.

A former officer in the British Royal Navy, Commodore Sanguinetti also reviews the other main shipping services provided by the Gibraltar Port Authority, which is a recognised maritime hub in the Western Mediterranean.

The article entitled ‘Gibraltar’s Port Captain: What you didn’t know about bunkering,’ explains the advantages and facilities offered by Gibraltar and how it has been able to maintain an edge in the face of stiff competition and how Gibraltar is the third busiest bunker port in Europe.

Captain Sanguinetti writes: “Gibraltar’s economy is built on the pillars of tourism, financial services, gaming, retail/wholesale and maritime services. As one of these critical pillars of our economy, the Port generates a significant number of jobs for the local community, while its financial spin off has a big impact on Gibraltar’s GDP. And all this is delivered in just seven square miles of water.”

Minister for the Port, Neil Costa, said the Gibraltar Government was engaged in a tireless campaign to promote the Port together with the wide range of professional services it provides the international shipping community.

Mr Costa said: “The port is a vital sector of our economy servicing a very competitive industry in a key strategic shipping lane. We are fully committed to a policy of expansion and marketing of our bunkering industry and keen to build upon our  reputation as a maritime centre of excellence in the region. The article in the New Statesman is just another example of our steadfast determination to pursue this.”
