Sep 23 - Minister Cortes And Environment Chief Executive At UN Climate Summit In New York

The Minister the Environment, Dr John Cortes, and the Chief Executive for the Department of the Environment, Dr Liesl Mesilio -Torres, have been invited by the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki- Moon to attend the United Nations Climate Summit to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York today.

This represents, says the Government, an “unprecedented opportunity” not only for Gibraltar to showcase its actions in the mitigation of local climate change but, more importantly, for world leaders to reach a meaningful agreement and take meaningful actions on the ground that can put us on a path to sustainable prosperity. The Government says it is delighted that Gibraltar delegates will be participating in this high profile event, the first time that there has been Gibraltar participation at this type of meeting. Governments worldwide have agreed to reach an agreement in 2015, which will be the focal task at this summit.

The Climate Summit will see the largest gathering to date of world leaders to catalyze climate action and to raise political ambition for a meaningful global legal agreement by 2015.

Dr Cortes said, "I was very proud to accept the invitation to attend at this United Nations meeting. Not only is it recognition of Gibraltar's commitment to the environment, but also of its ability to take its place within the global community. We can all be proud of where we are taking Gibraltar."
