Nov 28 - GSD Calls For Charles Bruzon House Works To Be Halted Until Investigation Completed

The GSD notes that yet again there has been a health and safety incident at the site of Charles Bruzon House affecting Governor's Meadow School.

This is the second incident affecting this school and the fourth in the last six months, says the party, following on from the crane collapse at the Aerial Farm site and the objects which fell from a crane at the Coach Park site affecting the adjacent Waterport public area.

The Opposition says that when the first incident occurred at Governor’s Meadow School the Government denied it and described the noise it caused as “footsteps” despite dozens of eye witnesses.  At the time, the GSD says it called on the Government to institute a full investigation of the incident and for works at the Charles Bruzon site to be halted pending the outcome of that investigation.  The Government stopped the works temporarily and then changed the working hours at the site so that it did not coincide with school hours.  Whilst the GSD says it welcomes the change of hours, it says that it is obvious “that something is not right” as far as health and safety at this site and urges the Government needs to get to the bottom of this.  The GSD therefore calls on the Government to take a “responsible approach” in dealing with these incidents and restoring public confidence in these and other works where there have been incidents in the recent past and conduct a through investigation of the health and safety procedures in place.  Until that is done, argues the Opposition, no works should be undertaken on this site because these incidents prove that something is not right.

Finally, the GSD says it has also been made aware of concerns regarding the works to No 6 Covent Place and their effect on St Mary’s School.

The GSD says it expects Government to ensure public safety is their primary concern at a site so near that school.
