Apr 30 - Government Responds To GGCA May Day Comments

The Government says it notes the statement made by the GGCA Committee about the May Day Rally in today’s press. It is unfortunate, says the Government, that the GGCA Committee have sought to blame the Government for what they perceive to be an exclusion from May Day.

The Government says it has not excluded any organisation from attending and, in fact, has facilitated the GGCA with a stand at Casemates, exactly in line with the other Trade Unions.

In addition, says Number Six, the GGCA was offered by the Chief Minister the opportunity of organising an event with Government support if they wished but the Committee of the GGCA have not reverted in this respect. The Government says it would be happy to start work with the GGCA on a rally for next year if they wish.

Number Six also says that, although Government has funded the entertainment for the whole day, Unite the Union have paid separately to use the stage to hold their traditional annual union rally and in that way reduce the cost to the taxpayer of the events of the day. As a result, Unite will be contributing towards the proportionate, unsubsidised (contrary to the GGCA's assertion) cost of the stage. The Unite event has been organised by Unite and the Government has had no input on the composition or the line-up of speakers. When approached on the subject by the GGCA, Government informed them of this and asked them to contact Unite.
