May 25 - Gibraltar To Be Enfranchised With UK In EU Referendum

The Government of Gibraltar is delighted to note the confirmation from the office of the Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP, that Gibraltar will be included in the franchise for the European Union Referendum.

This confirmation is in keeping with the assurances the Chief Minister had previously obtained from the Minister for Europe, the Rt Hon David Lidington, as to the intention of the Conservative Party if it won an absolute majority in the UK General Election.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said: “Mr Cameron has been true to his word to the people of Gibraltar and, as a British part of the EU, our voice will be heard as part of the franchise for this seminal exercise in democracy.

“We are working closely with the Prime Minister and his Government to ensure the necessary framework for the EU referendum is in place in Gibraltar at the same time as in the UK.

“I look forward to this important debate.”
