Sep 01 – Chief Minister And San Roque Mayor Discuss Future Opportunities Across Both Jurisdictions

The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix met for an official meeting at No6, earlier today.

Both Mr Picardo and Sr Ruiz Boix see the announcement made by the Gibraltar Government, the Foreign Office and the Spanish Government to step up law enforcement co-operation as a positive move, following confirmation that shots were fired by SVA officers during an incident which took place on 22nd August, however Mr Picardo insists that Gibraltar is not the problem here.

Mr Picardo said that the ‘without prejudice agreement’ will allow a united front against drug smuggling between police authorities in Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco.

Following last week’s meeting with the newly-elected La Linea Mayor Juan Franco, today’s meeting also touched upon further co-operation between San Roque and Gibraltar.

Sr Ruiz Boix said dialogue and co-operation are necessary, especially for a place like San Roque where nearly 4,000 residents work in Gibraltar.

Mr Picardo said some of the things discussed were the likelihood of using places in the San Roque area for storage facilities by big businesses in Gibraltar, and exploring further touristic opportunities.

He added: “The meeting was very positive and focused on what we can do together, ignoring all the issues that make headlines between Gibraltar and Spain.

“We can concentrate on the positive and focus on what we can do to make all our lives better.”
