Dec 01 - Unite Congratulates Gibraltar Youth Service

Unite the Union has congratulated the Gibraltar Youth Service for the modernisation of its Staff Handbook. The union says that, through this document, the Gibraltar Youth Service has created a ‘one stop information point’ that describes in detail the Policies and Procedures Youth and Community Workers and Support Workers would follow in relation to their employment.

A statement continued: “Unite is proud to have been able to guide and contribute towards the creation of this document that tackles issues of critical importance such as bullying, equal opportunities, health and safety and staffing ratios amongst others. Youth Worker specific guidance that deals with substance abuse and safeguarding children and young people were expertly addressed by the Youth Service and are also contained within this document.

The modern approach undertaken by the Ministry of Youth, led by Stephen Linares, and the Principal Youth Officer of the Youth Service, Mr Mark Zammit, where staff policies and procedures are addressed with the help of a Trade Union must be commended, as this meets the criteria where the principal stakeholders in the employment relationship are consulted and jointly create a document that satisfies all parties. Specific thanks must also be given to Unite Shop Steward Rebecca Figueras and the hard working staff of the Gibraltar Youth Service.

“In respects to the above, the Gibraltar Youth Service is pioneering a new direction in Management – Employee relations and should be recognised for as much.”
