Jan 25 - Series Of Earthquakes Strike The Strait Of Gibraltar

A major earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck the Strait of Gibraltar at 5.20am, followed by a series of six minor earthquakes.

Tremors have been felt by residents in Gibraltar and across the border in La Linea up the Costa del Sol, and there is said to be extensive damage caused to buildings in Melilla.

Internet users based in Gibraltar flocked to earthquake tracking sites, claiming to have felt movement. One Gibraltarian who lives on the 11th floor of a building claims to have felt shaking and saw the water in the kettle was moving.

YGTV reader Dina Kritsidimas-Eleftheriou, who works in Gibraltar and lives in La Linea, said: “I felt the earthquake and thought I was imagining things. I actually thought my husband was moving and woke him up to tell him to stop.

“And I was confused whether it was the bed moving or whether I was hallucinating.

“He felt it too and when he checked online he saw it was an earthquake.”

Another YGTV follower, Ian, said: “The bed was shaking really strongly, and the ceiling above me was creaking. I am also convinced I could hear some very low frequency rumbling, as I have very sensitive hearing, but certainly the cats were going loopy. Interestingly I think back and they were acting up from about 1am.

It must have been a big one to wake me, I sleep the sleep of the dead normally!”

According to earthquake-tracking website www.earthquake-report.com, tremors started at around 5.20am this morning, with a depth of 10km. The earthquake is said to have taken place 153km east of Gibraltar, some 86km north-west of Melilla, and 50km north off the Moroccan coast, near Al Hoceima, just four days after the earthquake was felt in the region. The other quakes measured an average of about 5.0 on the Richter Scale.
