May 23 - GONHS and Gibraltar Heritage Trust Say Rosia Bay Development Is Of "Significant Cause For Concern"

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust and Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society have noted with interest the recent exchanges between the prospective Rosia Bay Developers and the Petitioners against the project.

The two organisations sit on the Development & Planning Commission. A statement from the both said: "Both organisations would like to clarify that although they broadly welcomed the initial outline scheme in 2014, the recent revisions and additions have given significant cause for concern and led to a review of positions regarding elements of the scheme.

"Many of the issues identified at the DPC meeting of the 27th January are still being studied through the Environmental Impact Assessment, the results of which are yet to be finalised.

"Both GONHS and the GHT are keen to find a long term, sensitive and sustainable solution for Rosia Bay that protects its significant natural and historical heritage whilst also giving it a new lease of life and community use.

"They would however have strong reservations about any scheme that compromises the site’s ecological and historical value."

The project to build an indoor water park, an urban beach, six two-bedroom flats with one parking space each, berths for 50 small boats and a roof-top restaurant were rejected by the DPC in January this year due to a lack of information. The Rosia Bay development will be discussed at tomorrow's DPC meeting again.
