Jul 01 – HMS Mersey Arrives In Gibraltar

River Class Patrol Boat HMS Mersey will arrive in Gibraltar tomorrow to carry out some routine maintenance and training before deploying to the Mediterranean as part of the UK’s wider effort to manage the migrant crisis.

HMS Mersey recently paid a visit to the Caribbean island of Montserrat and witnessed the lasting effects of the devastation following the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano 20 years ago.

Two decades later, two thirds of the British territory remain off limits, including the former capital Plymouth, but the sailors were given the rare opportunity to look around this ‘forbidden zone’ when the patrol ship paid a three-day visit to Montserrat waters.

“Visiting the island’s devastation highlighted the significant impact the eruption has had on Montserrat over the past two decades,” said Surgeon Lieutenant Thomas Clingo, Mersey’s medical officer, who toured abandoned homes and communities with shipmates

HMS Mersey is the youngest of the original batch of River class patrol vessels. She patrols the waters of the UK and up to 200 miles in the Atlantic ensuring that fishing boats and trawlers stick to internationally-agreed quotas.
