Sep 30 – Gibraltar Can Become A Leading Startup Hub - Minister Costa

Gibraltar can become a world leader as a hub for startups and this fast-paced industry can form one of the pillars of the Rock’s post-Brexit economy, according to the Minister for Business Neil Costa.

Mr Costa explained his vision for the future of new businesses in Gibraltar at yesterday evening’s monthly meeting of the Gibraltar Startup Community in La Sala on the Sunborn.

In a short opening address, Mr Costa briefed those who attended on the Government’s policy to bring down the cost of doing business in Gibraltar.

Mr Costa argued that Gibraltar, having already established itself as a leading global centre for online gaming, was well-placed to enter the start-up market and compete with other locations:

“Gibraltar is primed to deal with incubators that deal with software and technology. Gibraltar has many advantages and, for us, small has to be beautiful.”

He said that Brexit, apart from presenting challenges, also opened up new possibilities for future growth and development in new industries.

“We have a blank canvas right now - give us your ideas and let’s make this Gibraltar incubator be the beginning of something as important as the e-gaming and financial services industries.”

The Minister invited entrepreneurs to send him their ideas to help him and his ministry formulate policy proposals to assist the startup community.

“As we have the exciting, exploratory talks about how to create an incubator or an accelerator, we can factor into our decision making what you have to say.”

Learn the lingo:

A startup company is an entrepreneurial venture which is typically a newly emerged, fast-growing business that aims to meet a marketplace need by developing or offering an innovative product, process or service.

A business incubator is a company that helps new and startup companies to develop by providing services such as management training or office space

Startup accelerators, are fixed-term programs that include mentorship and educational components and culminate in a public pitch event or demo day. (Source: Wikipedia)
