Oct 28 - Upper Rock Activities For Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme Bronze Participants

A group of 40 Bronze participants, accompanied by their group leaders, had their first introduction to camp craft activities, last Saturday.

The participants were asked to take part in a short walk to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve where activities such as cooking on a Trangia stove and tent pitching. There was also a session on how to properly pack bags for an expedition and the equipment required for a successful and safe adventurous journey.

Participants had their first experience with the equipment they will be using on their qualifying expedition next year. They were provided with different tents and asked to work as a team and erect their tents, learnt the about the types of food they could bring on their expedition as well as learn how to use a Trangia stove, combined with fuel and fire safety.

Lastly they carried out a workshop on equipment and bag packing. The qualifying expedition will require the participants to be 100% self sufficient so it is highly important they know what to bring and what to forgo.

Further preparation will be taking place over the coming weeks including; map skills, navigation, team building, trekking to prepare the participants for their first camp in February. Overall it was an enjoyable day out for all involved, with the participants getting a taste of what is in store for them in the next coming months.
