Dec 02 - Gibraltar Port Authority Attends Bunker Fuel Conference In Athens

Commodore Bob Sanguinetti, Captain of the Port and CEO, was a delegate at the Platts Annual Mediterranean Bunker Fuel Conference held in Athens last week.

He was invited to speak on the challenges facing Mediterranean ports to meet bunker fuel demand in the wake of the recently announced global cap on sulphur emissions.

The conference saw over 100 delegates come together with leaders from the energy industry and the maritime sector. Topics discussed included implementation plans for the new environmental regime in 2020, its impact on shipping, and the outlook for alternative fuels including LNG in the future.

The Captain of the Port was accompanied by Bunker Superintendent Victor Calderon, and several members from the private sector. Commodore Sanguinetti commented that he was delighted to be invited to speak about developments in the Mediterranean and, in particular, update the audience on recent developments and initiatives aimed at further improving the Port of Gibraltar’s efficiency and standing.

The Minister for Maritime Affairs, Gilbert Licudi, added that “Gibraltar’s high profile at key industry events such as this one reinforces the Port’s reputation on the regional and global stage.”

Commodore Sanguinetti also took advantage of his time in Athens, one of the world’s major shipping hubs, to meet up with several ship owners and operators as part of the GPA’s strategy of direct engagement with the maritime community.
