Dec 02 - Christmas Card Competition Winners Announced

His Excellency the Governor, Lieutenant General Edward Davis, and Mrs Davis, in association with the Department of Education, presented awards to the winners, runners-up and the highly commended of the 2016 official Christmas card design competition for school children in Gibraltar.

Along with His Excellency the Governor and Mrs Davis, the judges included the Minister for Education Dr Cortes, Paul Cosquieri and Sarah Payas.

There were 280 entries and as the standard this year was so high, His Excellency extended the commended category.

Speaking to the school children, His Excellency said the judges were looking for a design that captured the spirit of Christmas and the imagination and colours used to make something that was powerful and interesting, and told the story of Christmas in a novel and interesting way.

His Excellency asked the children why Christmas cards were so important, saying that for him, it's a way to remind family and friends that he is thinking of them.

"When I was in the military and I used to spend my Christmas away, the card was Christmas," he said. "That's what you would put by your bed and it would remind you of Christmas and made you feel close to your family and friends."
