Apr 16 - Classic Vehicle Association Welcomes New Classic Car Protection Legislation

parliament The Gibraltar Classic Vehicle Association (GCVA) welcomes Parliament’s approval of the new legislation designed to protect, enhance and properly regulate the use of classic vehicles in Gibraltar.

The new legislation means that for the first time classic vehicles are recognised in Law as requiring special treatment. The road testing requirements, popularly known as MOT testing, will take into account the age of the vehicle and the motor technology that was available at the time it was first built. This, for example, will exempt classic vehicles from today's very stringent emission controls.

Classic vehicles will be allowed to carry the old fashioned black and white number plates, which until now have been illegal. This concession allows the cars to be displayed with authentic looking number plates corresponding to their age.

To benefit from this new legal framework classic car owners must re-register their vehicles as classics. The GCVA will ensure that the members vehicles comply with the age requirements to be classified as a classic.

The GCVA insists that they have been very active promoting the fleet of Gibraltar's classic vehicles to Gibraltar residents and tourists via static displays at Casemates, John Mackintosh Square and the Cruise Terminal and Ocean Village. ‘The classics have drawn admiring looks from Gibraltar's visitors,’ notes a GCVA spokesman.

The GCVA will display a large part of their fleet on 17th May at 1pm in Casemates Square.
