Apr 16 - Fire Brigade In Upper Rock Rescue

Last Saturday evening, the City Fire Brigade rescued two young people from a cliff-face on the Upper Rock.

Having received an emergency call from a member of the public, the Brigade dispatched their rescue unit, plus a Fire Engine and an ambulance to a rock face near O’Hara’s Battery where they discovered two young people, a male and a female, stranded on separate rock ledges several metres from each other on the cliff face, with a drop of several hundred metres below them.

The Firefighter rescue team immediately rigged up their rope rescue equipment so that two firefighters could abseil down the cliff face. The young people were quickly brought to safety as sunlight began to fade. They had suffered no injuries and were generally in good shape although suffering from slight exposure.

The City Fire Brigade would like to remind the public that abseiling and or climbing should never be carried by inexperienced or unqualified personnel without the proper safety equipment since this could result in lives being put at risk.
