Apr 22 - Dermatology Initiative This Weekend – Walk-In Clinic Announced

On Saturday, 26th April, the Gibraltar Health Authority will hold a Dermatology initiative at the Primary Care Centre.

This initiative provides a unique opportunity for the public to have any notable skin changes checked out by the Dermatology team. Both of our visiting consultant dermatologists will be available for confirmation of diagnostics on the day.

It is the launch of this year’s sun awareness campaign and the plan is for it to be held annually. Skin cancer screening days are held throughout different countries on an annual basis to help raise awareness of skin cancer due to sun exposure. The day will also serve as a platform to increase public education.

In Gibraltar we already have a substantial number of skin cancers that are managed by the dermatology department and by surgeons in the hospital and it is imperative that we do all we can to reduce future incidences.

The importance of protecting ourselves from sun exposure cannot be over emphasised in order to protect our population from Malignant Melanoma and other sun induced skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

On Saturday 26th of April concerned members of the public should come to the Primary Care Centre via the main entrance between 9am and 11.30 and 2pm and 4.30pm where they can have these changes examined by a professional. No pre-booked appointment is required.

This initiative is aimed at looking at significant skin changes which could indicate skin cancer. It is not for examination of chronic skin conditions.

Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, commented, "I fully support this initiative from the dermatology team and the recently established sun-awareness committee. It is vitally important to be aware of the dangers posed by unprotected exposure to the sun. The walk-in clinic, with access to dermatological advice, including two Consultant Dermatologists offers a unique opportunity to the public and shows the GHA's commitment to health promotion and preventative medicine."
