Jul 22 - Special Museum Series Lecture On The First World War

The Gibraltar Museum, in conjunction with HQBF Gibraltar, have organised a special lecture under the museum series.

The lecture entitled “Europe goes to war: the outbreak of the First World War” will be delivered by Dr Matthias Strohn who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The event will be held this Friday, 25th July, at 7pm at the John Mackintosh Hall. Dr Strohn’s visit is being sponsored by the Government of Gibraltar.

Dr Strohn has a DPhil in Modern European History from the University of Oxford. His principal research interests are the Military History of the inter-war period 1918 to 1939; the German Army in the First World War (especially Western Front); the German Army in the Third Reich and in the Second World War; and the development of doctrine and military thought - how armies learn.

Dr Strohn has considerable experience as media consultant and interviewee, having worked with BBC 2 and the History Channel. He also has extensive experience in planning and delivering battlefield tours and was one of the architects of the highly successful RMAS Exercise ‘Normandy Scholar’. Dr Strohn has also deployed several times to Iraq (with the British Army) and to Afghanistan (with both the German and the British Armies).

Dr Strohn has a long list of publications to his name which includes several authored and edited books: The German Army and the Defence of the Reich: Military Doctrine and the Conduct of the Defensive Battle 1918-1939, Cambridge 2010; The First World War Companion, Oxford 2013; and The Great Adventure Ends: New Zealand and France on the Western Front, Christchurch 2013.

The lecture is open to the general public and is free of charge.
