Jul 24 - Government Plans 8 Floor Extension to St. Bernard’s Hospital

hospital During this morning’s Development and Planning Commission meeting, a series of Government developments were discussed, including a proposed 8-floor extension to St. Bernard’s Hospital that will allow for the GHA’s services to be re-distributed. The extension is set to be built in the courtyard, behind the main hospital building.

Commenting on the plans, Health Minister and DPC member Dr. John Cortes insisted that the building would resolve the issue of GHA facilities being too cramped. He suggested that although the extension seems rather over zealous, it will be cheaper in the long run and will allow for further expansion of the GHA in years to come.

Responding to a question on the physical appearance of the building, the developer explained that the facade would mimic the rest of the Europort building.

ESG member, Janet Howett questioned whether a light survey had been carried out, as the extension would block light access to the main hospital building. Dr. Cortes assured her that the entire courtyard would not be taken up by the building, and extensive use of glass would be made, to allow for the light to reflect. The estimated time duration for the planning and development of the extension was estimated at around 2 years and 9 months.

Commenting on the impact that construction works will have on the hospital, Dr. Cortes noted that the current works to develop a catering facility on the site are very similar and he has received no complaints from patients regarding the works. He added that much consideration would have to go into the works.
