Jul 29 - GSLA Host Childline Peer Pressure Workshop

The GSLA Summer Sports & Leisure Programme, Sports Train includes much more than sports, skills, drills, competitions, fitness and team building games. Each day after the Sports Train’s main activities children and young people take part in workshops covering a wide variety of topics delivered by Childline, RGP & NatWest to name but a few.

The theme of today’s 12 years and over workshop was ‘People who can help us’.  Child line’s Connie Attwood and Judith Sergeant introduced the concept of peer pressure to the 12+ age group. The presentation involved explaining what peer pressure was, with an emphasis on how it affects adults as well as children. A distinction was made between negative peer pressure that leads to crime and positive peer pressure that reinforces respect for laws and the community. The children were also introduced to coping mechanisms to beat negative peer pressure and ways in which to be more assertive in dealing with peer pressure.

The topic for the 7 to 8 year age group was delivered by RGP’s School Liaison Officer, Danny Rodriguez and covered ‘the police as helpers in the community’. The children were introduced to a policeman’s equipment and uniform and discussed myths that often surround the police, their equipment and their roles.  Policemen are here to help and their batons can be used to open a jammed door in a car crash, rather than as a weapon. The children were also taught the police uniform’s fluorescent hue was there so that people needing police assistance can see a policeman from afar.

Every day the Sports Train Programme features a half-hour cool down where the youngsters are given presentations that are aimed at educating and enhancing their skills and knowledge of daily life. Childline and the RGP will be holding other workshops throughout the GSLA’s Sports Train programme.

Come along to the Summer Sports & Leisure Programme sponsored by NatWest; there really is something for all children and young people in Gibraltar.
