July 30 - Government Saddened by Death of Long Term Friend of the Rock

richard wells It is with great sadness that the Government of Gibraltar has learned of the passing of Richard Wells CBE, a long-time Friend of Gibraltar.

Having already visited the Rock as a young man, Richard joined the British Board of Trade in 1964, served in the European Commission from 1973 - 1978 and then in the Department of Trade and Industry and later in HM Treasury.

Throughout his career, Richard was always keen to ensure that Gibraltar received its full and fair share of all grants and other financial aid available from both London and Brussels. For example, in his seven years at the Department of Trade, he and his team arranged for £20M of grants to be paid to Gibraltar.

On his retirement, Richard immediately joined the Board of the Friends of Gibraltar and he remained utterly committed to the organisation until his death.

Commenting on the matter, Minister Bossano noted, ‘I wish to express our most sincere condolences to Mrs Ditte Wells and to her family. The Government is immensely grateful to Richard for his valuable contribution during what was a difficult time for Gibraltar and, in Richard, we always had a friend in London who would be mindful of Gibraltar's best interests.’
