Aug 26 - New Organic Fruit And Veg Stall

A new stall selling organic fruit, veg and bread has opened at Fish Market Road behind Ocean Heights. The stall, called Local Organics, is owned and run by Simon Cooper.

The stall has been open for three weeks and is proving to be very popular with customers.

“It’s been pretty good – we’ve even run out of produce several times,” said Simon.

In contrast to the mass-produced and globally sourced food sold in large supermarkets, Simon only sells fresh, seasonal produce.

Simon has been running the farm for four years so he’s the best person to ask about organic food.

“Organic means that no pesticides or herbicides have been used on the crop or soil. We only use water and predator bugs to fight off pests. Even though that means we lose some crops, we’d rather do this than spray any chemicals on our produce,” he says.

All the products, ranging from figs, aubergines and cucumbers to tomatoes, raspberries and onions, are grown to meet rigorous organic standards in a small farm in the Zabal area of La Linea.

“We carry a little of everything at the farm which allows us to keep the stall stocked throughout the week,” he explains.

Simon says he started growing strawberries at home a few years ago and, with some help from friends, he quickly snapped up a greenhouse situated on a large plot. He was ill at the time and the farm gave him a reason to get out into the fresh air and get some exercise.

The stall also sells organic bread with German rye bread, pure spelt bread, seeded, white loaves, molletes and whole-wheat loaves all available on a daily basis.

The stall is open from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 3:45pm.
